Struggle for Stalingrad

When, in September of 2008, we published our first PDF booklet entitled Catalonia Stands Alone - 1713-1714: the Catalans' War, we expressed our aim that, far from being an isolated initiative, that booklet might become the first of a whole collection of wargaming guides devoted to the wars of the Catalans.

Soon afterwards, we started collecting information on the Hispanic armies of Charles of Habsburg and Philip d'Anjou during the War of the Spanish Succession, for our intention was to further explore this period and unveil some of its numerous shortcomings.

But destiny has given us an unexpected turn, after our local gaming club started planning a wargaming campaign focused on the 1942 German offensive against Stalingrad, to be played following the Flames of War ruleset. Given the scarce precedents in this area, we worked out a campaign of our own (based on some boardgames and the Firestorm campaign system of Battlefront Miniatures Ltd). After submitting this initiative to The Miniatures Page Message Boards, we understood that it would be a great goal to re-edit our campaign in English language too --and to do so under the wide, protective umbrella of this home-publishing label, Desperta Ferro! Wargaming Guides series.

Finally, we are proud to let you know that Struggle for Stalingrad - September 1942 is ready and available for free, while its original, Catalan language version will still be available from our club's website, www.wargames.cat.

It's true that Struggle for Stalingrad - September 1942 falls quite far away from our initial purpose, which was no other than unveiling the Catalan involvement into the main conflicts in History. However, we believe that such a work helps to reinforce credit on another major feature of our home-publishing label: making worldwide available materials produced by players, aimed at players. We wish you enjoy this booklet extensively!

Struggle for Stalingrad - September 1942 is available for download at no cost, entirely for free. Click here to download the zipped file containing the booklet along with the mapsheets and counters.

By no means, Bill. Only that I've found that no previous serious work on this matter has ever been done by Spanish Historians. And that researches, by the Catalan specialists I am in contact with, are running quite slower than expected. To show you an example of this, Catalan newspapers and magazines are still publishing divulgation articles on the Battle of Talamanca (1714), explaining to public those same facts I wrote in my booklet 9 months ago.

It seems that some progress has been done in the exploration of the Battle of Prats de Rei battlefield (1711), but it will take some time for Historians to publish their conclusions, so...

As explained in my last article, this second booklet falls far away from my initial purposes, but I thought it was a chance I had to take advantage on.

Thanks for your concern, Bill.
